Khamma Ghani Sa

To all my friends "Khamma Ghani Sa"...

I was born in Jodhpur, the Sun City. It’s famous for its delicious food (that’s all I remember about the heritage city. HENCE PROVED. I am a big foodie). I did my schooling from Jodhpur and graduation from Jaipur. Finally came to my Karma Bhoomi Bangalore. “Karma Bhoomi” because most of the time I stay in office( My wife will not like this I know ). No regrets after all I get paid for it.

Born in Marwar and belong to a traditional yet well educated Marwari family. Obviously, I am supposed to understand and speak Marwari very well. But yesterday when I was talking to my father-in-law over phone.Oh ! before that I want to say he has a very good sense of humor which I like most in him.(It is not just to please my wife ).Lets continue ,  he greeted me with  most of the times heard words "Khamma Ghani Sa" and I replied with "Ghani Ghani Kamma Sa" .

But it left a question in my mind .. What is the actual meaning of this "Khamma Ghani Sa" ?

Today in office , after I signed in to gtalk ... I saw couple of Jodhpuri friends online . Discussed with them about these mystery word ... after discussion and couple of google searches found out its meaning .

Khamma - "Daya or Meeharbani or Mafi" basically forgiveness
Ghani      - "Bahut "
and Sa is use to give respect .
This is basically used to greet elders in Marwari Language .

Next time onwards I'll  make sure that before my father-in-law greet me with these no-more mystery words I will greet him with "Khamma Ghani Sa" .

Thanks to my dear friends Ankur Acharya , Rakesh Harsh, Dheeraj Tanwar with whome i discussed on these words.

A very special thanks to my beautiful and lovable wife for playing the role of editor :).

  3. Khamma literally originates from kshama, or forgiveness. It is solicited in advance to handle any exceptions that were raised by the course of one's words/actions. Usually used as a symbol of respect and in object-orientated terms, it means all transactions will be completed within the scope and no exceptions shall go unhandled!

Great to see you join the blogosphere and nice to know you have an enjoyable company in the extended family!

  7. I am a jain from Punjab and I am regular viewer of Maharana Pratap. When I heard Word Khama Ghani in that serial I thaught that Khama must have the meaning Kshma "Forgiveness" and Ghani means Bahut because we, Jains also use this word "Kimat khimana" on our festival "Samvatsari'. But i was not able to co relate this words with Greetings. That's why I searched on Google and find the answer which was in my mind. But still I am doubtful whether it does mean so ? If yes whether the person who first greets the other is asking for his forgiveness and other person also reciprocates Khama Ghani whether he is giving his forgivness or he also asks for forgiveness

  16. I'm a tamilian. I know little Hi. With this little knowledge i used to watch lot of Hindi programs. Particularly i am very interested in knowing about traditions and culture of various people. Because of the technology i am able to watch various programs in TV and
Net. Thanks to DD Girnar programs such as Dayro and Gharbha tharo mar. Once i watched a dayro about Ramdev pir by Ramdas gondaliya, which prompted me to watch a Gujarati movie on Ramdev pir. I heard the beautiful words Khamma Ghani Khamma, uttered by the characters. I understand it's for "Thank you very much".
But your definition is wonderful. Thank you.
